Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister slams critics saying ‘the Portuguese are sick, petty, stupid and ungrateful’

Katia Aveiro has hit back at critics of Cristiano Ronaldo after some sections of the Portuguese media called for the 37-year-old to be dropped from the national side. 

The Manchester United striker was hit with a wave of criticism after two underwhelming performances in the UEFA Nations League.

One of Portugal’s biggest media outlets, A Bola, ran with a headline ‘less Ronaldo, more Portugal’ ahead of the 1-0 defeat to Spain.

In a fiery rant on social media, Aveiro came to her brother’s defence. Writing on Instagram (as quoted by the Daily Mirror), she said: “He has his family and those who love him by his side. They will always be by his side, no matter what.

“But the current times don’t surprise me at all. The Portuguese spit on the plate they eat [from], it has always been that way. That’s why when someone appears from the ashes and changes mentalities, it bothers… With you always, my king. Calm down.”

The 44-year-old added: “It is necessary to give a hand to those who have always given theirs to Portugal. But the Portuguese are sick, petty, soulless, stupid, ungrateful and forever ungrateful. This guy who’s sitting, he’s on his knees… There’s no one to give him a hand.

“It is cruel. And it was already so much, but so much that he gave and gives. The one sitting is called Cristiano Ronaldo and he is just the best player in the world.”

Ronaldo has endured a difficult start to the season with Manchester United. The forward has scored one goal across all competitions and has started in just two of his last eight games.

Despite bagging 18 league goals last season, manager Erik ten Hag has used the five-time Ballon d’Or winner as an impact sub.

During the recent international break, Ronaldo returned to the starting line-up for his nation.

The forward produced an assist during a 4-0 win over the Czech Republic, but failed to inspire in the subsequent 1-0 defeat against Spain.

To make matters worse, losing against La Roja cost Portugal a spot in the UEFA Nations League play-offs. Fernando Santos’ men finished second in their group, just one point behind the Spaniards.

Toughest period of his career?

Ronaldo has faced a number of challenges in both his professional and private life over the last couple of years.

His battles led him to a recent meeting with world-renowned psychologist Dr. Jordan Peterson.

Speaking in an interview with Piers Morgan, Peterson revealed the reason behind their meet up, saying: “He invited me to come and see him.

“He’d had some trouble in his life a few months ago and a friend of his sent him some of my videos and he said he’d watched those. Then he read one of my books and found it helpful, he wanted to talk.

“I went out to his house and we talked for about two hours. He showed me all his equipment for staying in tip-top condition, we talked about his companies. Mostly we talked about what he wanted in the future and some of the obstacles that he’s facing.”

At the age of 37, Ronaldo’s career is coming to a gradual end. Despite this, the Portugal international is intent on pushing his body to the limit in a desperate attempt to remain at the pinnacle of the sport.

While Ronaldo continues to be one of the world’s most prolific names, his days at the top are numbered, with many predicting the 2022 World Cup to be his final run at a major tournament.
